With over fifty years of history, Enagás has marked 25 years since it took on the role of Technical Manager of the Gas System (GTS) in Spain.

Accompanying Enagás today in the celebration of this anniversary during the 116th Gas System Monitoring Committee were representatives of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge and the National Commission on Markets and Competition (CNMC), as well as companies and associations from the sector.

In the year 2000, following the mandate of Royal Decree-Law 6/2000 of 23 June, Enagás set up the Technical Management of the Gas System with the aim of ensuring the continuity, security and coordination of the supply of natural gas to homes, services and industry.

This work, which the company carries out in collaboration with all the agents in the sector, allows the Gas System to operate uninterruptedly 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Spain is currently a key natural gas hub in Europe and a world benchmark in security of energy supply, thanks to a robust gas system with seven regasification terminals, which allows for a wide range of supply sources, more than 12,000 km of gas pipelines in the backbone network, more than 70,000 km of distribution pipelines and four underground storage facilities.

As Technical Manager of the System, Enagás coordinates the operation of 233 shippers, 19 distributors and 10 infrastructure operators.

Milestones of the Technical Manager of the System

During these 25 years, the Technical Manager of the System has evolved hand in hand with important milestones in the sector that have fostered competitiveness, transparency and efficiency.

These include the liberalisation of the gas market in Spain in 2008, the birth of the Iberian Gas Market in 2015, the integration of the European gas market with the European network codes in 2017 and the implementation of the single tank model - in compliance with a CNMC Circular - pioneering in Europe, in 2020.

Digitalisation - with tools such as SCADA and SL-ATR - and the implementation of artificial intelligence technologies, allow Enagás to provide real-time supervision and prediction in operations, key factors for the Spanish Gas System to continue to be one of the safest, most efficient and diversified in the world.

In 2023, the Technical Manager of the System - at the request of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge - launched the System of Guarantees of Origin of renewable gases, which certifies the renewable origin of gas produced in Spain, and monitors the operation of 186 registered entities, including 43 renewable gas production plants, 40 biogas and biomethane plants, and three hydrogen plants.
