The Valencian Regional Minister for Innovation, Industry, Trade and Tourism, Marián Cano, today visited the Holcim and Saggas facilities in Sagunto to learn about the ‘CO2necta’ project, promoted by the consortium formed by the two companies and Enagás, which will present the initiative to the next call for Innovation Funds, the European Commission’s programme for financing innovative low-carbon technologies.
During the visit, Marián Cano gave her support to the development of the project, highlighting the “support from the Government of Carlos Mazón in promoting this type of projects, which bring so much added value to our companies and our territory”. “The Generalitat is committed to advancing decarbonisation in industry as a key element of innovation and competitiveness, something that is perfectly reflected in this project,” she added.
The visit was also attended by the President of the Port Authority of Valencia - to which the Port of Sagunto is attached - Mar Chao, the Mayor of Sagunto, Darío Moreno, and the Councillor for Industry of Sagunto City Council, Toni Iborra. On behalf of the companies promoting the project were the CEO of Holcim España, Ricardo de Pablos; the Business Development General Manager, Fernando Impuesto; and the General Manager of Saggas, Santiago Álvarez.

The CEO of Holcim Spain, Ricardo de Pablos, highlighted that “CO2necta is a key project to boost the decarbonisation of cement and concrete, as well as a growth engine for the industry in our country”.
For his part, the Enagás’ Business Development General Manager stressed that “CO2necta is a pioneering initiative in the sustainable management of CO2 in Spain that will place a strategic infrastructure such as the Saggas regasification terminal in a privileged position in Europe to advance the industry’s decarbonisation efforts”.
‘CO2necta’ is an innovative circular economy project that seeks to promote the decarbonisation of industry through the development of new technologies, which will prevent the emission of more than 560,000 tonnes of CO2 per year in the Valencian Community through the capture and liquefaction of this gas. The project is a perfect example of energy efficiency since, for liquefaction, the cold generated during the regasification process carried out at Saggas would be used.
To this end, CO2necta contemplates the development of a CO2 capture plant at the Holcim factory, a ‘ceoduct’ by Enagás to transport it to the Saggas terminal in the port of Sagunto and storage facilities at this regasification terminal - in which Enagás holds a 72.5% - which will maintain the CO2 liquefied at -30ºC until it is loaded onto ships for transport by ship to the final storage site.
Partnership model
The consortium formed by Enagás, Holcim and Saggas is an example of collaboration between leading companies committed to industry transformation and decarbonisation. The CO2necta project is based on the establishment of an integrated CO2capture, transport and storage value chain.
