Enagás and Molins join forces to lead innovation in carbon capture and transport in Europe

Enagás and Molins have taken a decisive step towards industrial decarbonisation by formalising a cooperation agreement to promote their joint candidacy for the Innovation Fund 2025 with the innovative Mosusol netCO2 project. This ambitious initiative, which will integrate advanced carbon capture, use and storage (CCUS) technologies, will position Spain as a benchmark in sustainable innovation and energy transition. 

The Mosusol netCO2 project sets a pioneering precedent in the transition to sustainable industrial operations by integrating advanced CCUS technologies with state-of-the-art CO2 transport infrastructure. The initiative aims to decarbonise hard-to-abate industries, with a particular focus on cement production, and position Spain as a benchmark for innovation in carbon management.

The project foresees the capture of one million tonnes of CO2 per year through a capture facility in Molins, located in Sant Vicenç dels Horts (Barcelona), which will be transported by Enagás for subsequent storage. With an estimated total investment of 590 million euros, the project will make a significant contribution to the decarbonisation of industrial sectors and reduce water consumption associated with industrial processes.

This open access CO2 transport network will provide efficient transport, measurement, quality control and delivery of captured carbon dioxide. It will also integrate cutting-edge technologies to optimise the management of the pipeline’s lifecycle, improving the safety and efficiency of the process. 

The project, which reinforces both companies’ commitment to sustainability and the fight against climate change, will make a significant contribution to the decarbonisation of industrial sectors and will reduce water consumption associated with industrial processes.

The CEO of Enagás, Arturo Gonzalo, has pointed out that “the Mosusol netCO2 project is part of our objective to continue to make progress in the joint commitment to reduce the carbon footprint in hard-to-abate industrial sectors, and represents an opportunity for Enagás and Molins to jointly lead innovation to contribute to the decarbonisation of  industry while increasing its competitiveness.

Marcos Cela, CEO of Molins, highlighted: "The Mosusol netCO2 Project is an example of our firm commitment to the decarbonisation of the construction sector. Our goal is to achieve carbon neutrality at our Sant Vicenç dels Horts plant by 2031. We are consolidating our strategy to implement key actions for the energy transition as part of our Sustainability Roadmap. This project shows how cooperation between different industrial sectors can accelerate decarbonisation and contribute to Europe's climate goals

The cooperation between Enagás and Molins already received the STEP (Strategic Technologies for Europe Platform) seal in the call for the Innovation Fund 2023, recognizing the project as strategic for the European Union. By promoting a synergistic ecosystem that combines carbon capture, transport, use and storage, the Mosusol netCO2 Project not only addresses Catalonia's industrial emissions - which amount to around 5 million tonnes per year - but also offers a scalable and replicable model for achieving carbon neutrality, allowing the development of a Hub for carbon capture, transport, storage and use not only in Catalonia, but throughout the Mediterranean region.

Thanks to a comprehensive strategy and the deployment of innovative technologies, the Mosusol netCO2 Project exemplifies Molins and Enagás' pioneering vision for sustainable industrial ecosystems and reinforces their leadership in the decarbonisation of industry.
