The European Commission has approved 100% of the funding requested by Enagás for the studies of the Projects of Common Interest (PCI) of the H2med corridor and the first axes of the Spanish Hydrogen Backbone.

These funds, which come from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) of the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA), amount to 75.8 million euros, including studies for underground storage related to the Spanish Hydrogen Backbone.

The first axes of the Spanish Hydrogen Backbone are the Vía de la Plata Axis, with its connection to the Puertollano Hydrogen Valley, and the Axis that in turn includes the axes of the Cantabrian Coast, the Ebro Valley and the East (Levante)—with a total planned length of approximately 2,600 km—. The H2Med comprises a connection between Celorico da Beira in Portugal and Zamora (CelZa), and a maritime connection between Barcelona and Marseille (BarMar).

In October 2024, Enagás submitted the application for this call for CEF funding to carry out the studies for these European Projects of Common Interest (PCI).

In the same call, CINEA also awarded funds for underground storage studies related to the first axes of the Spanish Hydrogen Backbone.

This EU investment for the development of green hydrogen energy infrastructure Projects of Common Interest, in which Enagás participates, representing 50% of the total investment for these studies, will allow the company to advance in the development of these key infrastructures for the decarbonisation of European industry and to achieve the European objectives of the European Green Deal and REPowerEU.

CINEA has approved CEF funding of around 250 million euros in this call for development studies for 21 hydrogen infrastructure projects.

In total, the European Commission will provide almost 1.25 billion euros in CEF grants for a total of 41 cross-border energy infrastructure projects under the Trans-European energy networks (TEN-E) policy.
