The industrial biomethane production plant in La Galera (Tarragona) has successfully completed the first tests to inject this renewable gas, which comes from the management of biodegradable organic waste, into the gas grid. This facility, promoted by Enagás together with the companies Infraestructura Biometagás and Biometagás, which signed an agreement in 2021 to jointly promote this project, is the first private connection to the gas transmission network in Spain.

The plant is owned by Biometagás La Galera, and Infraestructura Biometagás owns the gas pipeline that connects the biomethane plant to the Enagás’ Basic Gas Pipeline Network. The plant thus becomes the second biomethanisation plant connected to the transmission network in Spain, after the Valdemingómez Technology Park in Madrid.
Through the Green Link initiative, Enagás facilitates the connection of biomethane and other renewable gas production to the high-pressure pipeline network. Thanks to the project, Enagás’ gas pipeline network has the capacity and is technically prepared to take on an eventual exponential growth in connection requests. Green Link contributes to decarbonisation by promoting a flexible and efficient connection of renewable gases, and boosts the development of the circular economy through the recovery of organic waste.
Since March 2021, the companies behind La Galera plant have been carrying out the technical work necessary to insert a new injection module, which allows the biomethane to be measured and analysed and introduced into the gas system. Enagás has been commissioned to build the
pipeline connecting the plant to the national transmission network. For its part, AGF Procesos Biogas, S.L. has provided the technology required for the production of biogas and its corresponding upgrading.
The biomethane, resulting from this upgrading process, will be produced from approximately 150 tonnes per day of organic waste from agro-livestock activities and the agri-food industry. The plant will generate and inject a maximum output of 50 GWh/year into the gas network, which is equivalent to the average annual consumption of 6,300 homes.
