Demand for natural gas in Spain grows by 8% in October

31 October 2017

• National demand for natural gas has grown by 9% in the year to date

Demand for natural gas in Spain has ended October with growth of about 8% compared to the same month the previous year, reaching approximately 29,300 GWh.

Conventional demand, destined for domestic, commercial and industrial consumption, ended the month with an increase of about 4%, to exceed 20,600 GWh. This is the largest increase registered in the month of October since official records have been kept. This is mainly the result of the greater use of natural gas by industry, which grew by about 7%. Consumption has risen in most industrial sectors.

The demand for natural gas for power generation ended October with a rise of 19% compared to the same month the previous year, to reach 8,600 GWh. This increase is the consequence of very low hydroelectricity generation and a lower contribution from wind power.

In the year to date, natural gas demand in Spain this year has grown by about 9% over the same period of 2016 largely owing to growth in industrial demand (7.3%), which represents 60% of the total national demand. It has also contributed to the increase in conventional demand and deliveries of natural gas for power generation.
