Enagás CEO Arturo Gonzalo pointed out that hydrogen infrastructures will be crucial for industry as well as for mobility. "Spain has a very robust Gas System thanks to the infrastructure we have been able to create over recent decades. We need the same with hydrogen: if we are able to develop this network, we are going to change the face of transport in Europe," he stated at the 9th El Economista Energy Forum on 5 September.
During his speech at the round table discussion of “Infrastructures and development of renewable gases: Biomethane and hydrogen", Arturo Gonzalo underlined that in 2025, European obligations come into force that will contribute to the increased use of green hydrogen in aviation and maritime transport. "Decarbonisation will only be possible with the combination of hydrogen and biofuels," he said.
The CEO also announced that the company will present an update on the progress of the Spanish hydrogen backbone network and its interconnections at the 3rd Enagás Hydrogen Day, to be held on 29 January 2025. Arturo Gonzalo explained that Enagás is making progress in the preparation of citizen participation processes for these infrastructures.
"These projects will have a very important territorial component, with the participation of local entities, autonomous communities and distribution companies," he added.
The round table discussion was moderated by Rubén Esteller, deputy editor of El Economista, and was attended by the CEO of Nortegas, Javier Contreras; the CEO of Redexis, Fidel López Soria; the CEO of Nedgia, Raúl Suárez; the CEO of Exolum, Jorge Lanza; the Partner in charge of Energy, Resources and Industry at Deloitte, Oliverio Álvarez; the CEO of PreZero in Spain and Portugal, Gonzalo Cañete, and the Managing Director Spain of Smartenergy, José María Llopis.
