Enagás has announced the results of the Call For Interest process, which took place during the last quarter of 2023, at its 2nd Hydrogen Day in January 2024. This non-binding consultation has enabled the company to carry out a verified analysis of the real potential of the renewable hydrogen market in Spain and to ratify the proposal to develop a hydrogen backbone infrastructure by 2030 for Spain, included in the European Union’s list of Projects of Common Interest (PCI).
The data obtained in this Call For Interest are key in speeding up the creation of a competitive hydrogen market in Spain and Europe. The consultation, audited and verified by Bureau Veritas, involved 206 companies with 650 projects. The analysis of the information received has made it possible to define three potential renewable hydrogen supply and demand scenarios for 2030: maximum potential scenario, Call For Interest scenario and base scenario.
It includes the total production and consumption figures recorded by the players involved in the process: 45% are producers, 40% consumers and 15% traders. This scenario has identified the following approximate data:
Mt/y = million tonnes per year
It only takes into account the most mature projects* of all those submitted for consultation (including exports and discounting self-consumption). This scenario has identified the following approximate data:
Only includes mature projects* selected in the Call For Interest scenario that are focused on domestic consumption. This scenario is aligned with the update of the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC) and has identified the following approximate data:
* A mature project is considered to be one that, according to the information provided by the agents, meets one or more of the following requirements: it has a hydrogen sales contract, is in the construction or development phase or is in the pipeline with established development companies.
The results of the Call for Interest have confirmed the infrastructures presented at the European Commission’s call for PCI: the Cantabrian Coast Axis, Ebro Valley Axis, Levante Axis, Vía de la Plata Axis -with its connection to the Puertollano Hydrogen Valley-, the Guitiriz-Zamora Axis, as well as two underground hydrogen storage facilities in Cantabria and the Basque Country. The results have also made it possible to identify new areas of aggregation of production and demand that will be analysed on the basis of identified needs.
In addition to renewable hydrogen, the consultation also notes the industry’s interest in the production, transmission and storage of other molecules, such ammonia (NH3) and CO2 capture processes.
